SLCS Rules of Entry


The Smells Like Centenary Spirit (SLCS) battle of the bands competition is open to all bands who are residents of the ACT region (within 100km or 1 hour drive of Canberra). All entrants must be between the ages of 14 and 22.

Definition of Band for the competition:

Typically having 2 or more members, with chordal (eg keyboard, guitar, and rhythmic components (eg percussion which could be played on drums, guitar, stomp-box).  Generally would be at least guitar, bass, drums and vocals. An example of a two person band is the Black Keys, the White Stripes.  Note that fully sequenced/dj only, or acoustic duos where no rhythmic component would be excluded.

Note:  Performers will be asked to produce proof of their eligibility at each heat (eg ID cards/Drivers Licence).  Any performer found to be ineligible will be immediately disqualified.

NOTE: By entering the competition you agree to all Terms and Conditions and being available to perform on any/all heat dates and the final.

Follow the instructions. Person submitting (on behalf of band) will be asked to:

  • Enter Band name, their email address and create a password
  • Pay the $11 entry fee
  • Enter their contact details + the name, mobile phone number & email address for another band member
  • Agree to all the Terms and Rules of entry to this contest.
  • Submit at least one of: Mp3 of best song and/or YouTube video footage of live performance
  • Submit a BIO & Picture (jpg / gif or png file)

Cost of entry for each song/submission $11.  If you enter and then have to withdraw from the event SLCS will refund your money. To do this please email with the request including artist name, reason for withdrawing and bank account BSB and account details for refund.


Midnight, Monday 15 July 2013


A panel of music industry representatives will review entries and rank them according to criteria. The top ranked 32 bands will then be selected to perform at the heats in September.


Bands will be judged against the following criteria: song-writing, individual member performance, group performance, originality and professionalism.


Heats will be run in September on the following dates:

  • Saturday 7th
  • Saturday 14th
  • Friday 20th
  • Friday 27th

Heats will be judged by a panel of ACT Music Industry representatives. Judges will score each performing band against criteria. The top two ranked bands from each heat will then progress to the finals.

A wildcard place will be awarded to the winner of the Lift-off band competition


The selected eight finalists will compete in the final at the main concert on Saturday 16 November. A panel of national music industry representative from record labels, booking agents, promoters, managers and publishers. Judges will again score each band against the criteria, with the top ranked band deemed the overall winner.

6. Notification of bands chosen for the heats

Selected bands will be informed via email and phone on Friday 26th of July 2013. The heat line-ups will be publicly announced on Tuesday 30th July 2013. The two highest ranked bands will be informed of progression on the night of each heat.

7. Notification of Winners

The overall winners will be announced on the evening of the final on Saturday 16 November.

8. Prizes

The final winner of the Smells Like Centenary Spirit ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition will win:

  • Youth Live Artist of 2013 MusicACT Annual Music Award (MAMA) to be presented at the MAMAs awards night, Albert Hall, Saturday 23rd November 2013
  • Performance on national all-ages festivals Groovin the Moo 2014 and Bastardfest 2014 (dependant on style “fit” ). The festival dates for 2014 are to be advised.
  • Personal introductions to contemporary music industry figures including publishers, labels, managers and booking agents
  • All finalists will receive free membership to MusicACT for a year, free entry to all MusicACT events during that year, promotional packages as outlined below.
  • The package of promotional activities that will be undertaken on behalf of the winning artists will include, but not be limited toPerformance at, and Presentation of the Youth Live Performance Award at the annual MAMAs
  • Profiling on the MusicACT and Smells Like Centenary websites
  • Promotion of all winners in local and national media
  • Other prizes tba

9. Promotion of winners & use of materials

By submitting all artists agree to have their materials including images and music be used by MusicACT for promotional purposes on a non-exclusive right, free of charge, basis. NOTE – minors MUST have their parental written consent to this release.


No person shall consume alcohol or drugs in the vicinity of the premise, including within vehicles, car-park, etc. Zero tolerance to alcohol and/or drugs applies. Any performer found affected will be immediately disqualified from the competition and required to leave the premise promptly. By entering this competition you agree to be breathalysed at any given time.


Any performer found to have intentionally damaged sound or venue equipment or fittings will be held responsible for the recovery cost.


MusicACT committee members and staff are NOT eligible to enter the Competition.
